An Dàn Mòr air Fhàs : The Great Lay of Becoming

1.

Ro thoiseach gach toiseachaidh cha robh nì ann ach an Fharsaingeachd Mhòr, do-thuigsinneach do inntinnean dhaoine bàsmhoir. Ro’n t-Solas agus ro’n Dhorchadas, cha robh Bith no Neo-Bhith ann. Cha robh Àrd no Ìosal ann, fuaim no sàmhchair. Cha robh ann ach an Neo-Chrìochnach, gun chruth, gun dealachadh, agus gun fhianais.

Before the beginning of every beginning there was nothing but the Great Vastness, incomprehensible to the minds of mortal people. Before the Light and before the Darkness, there was neither Being nor Non-Being. There was no High nor Low, no sound nor stillness. There was only the Endless One, without form, without distinction, and without witness.

2.

Oir cò a chitheadh am Falamh nuair nach robh neach ann ga fhaicinn? Cò a labhradh an t-Ainm nuair nach robh cluas ann a chluinneadh a ghairm? Cò a ghràdhaicheadh nuair nach robh neach ann ri ghràdhachadh? Ach ann an cridhe na Farsaingeachd sin dh’èirich miann, comas gun ghluasad, iarrtas gun chuspair, agus ceist gun fhacal.

For who would behold the Void when there was no one to behold it? Who would speak the Name when there was no ear to hear its calling? Who would love when there was none to be loved? Yet within the heart of that Vastness there arose a longing, a potential without movement, a desire without object, and a question without word.

3.

An sin mhiannaich an t-Aon e fhèin aithneachadh. Uime sin thàinig a’ Bheatha sìos don Neo-Bheo. Chaidh Tobar na Beatha a-steach do Neamhnidh. Chaidh an Solas a-steach don Doimhne. Chaidh an Neo-Chrìochnach a-steach do chrìoch agus do chruth. Dh’iarr an Leannan an Leannanach mar sgàthan air aghaidh na h-Aibheise, agus mar sin ghlac a’ Bheatha greim air a’ Mharbh, agus uaith sin thàinig gach beòthalachd agus gach cruth.

Then the One desired to know itself. Therefore Life came down into the Unliving. The Wellspring of Life entered into Nothingness. The Light entered into the Deep. The Endless entered into limit and into form. The Lover sought the Beloved as a reflection upon the face of the Abyss, and thus Life took hold of the Dead, and from that came every animation and every form.

4.

Mar sin thòisich a’ Chiad Dùsgadh, a’ chiad ghluasad mothachaidh ann an doimhneachdan a’ chomais. Mar a bha e anns a’ Chiad Àm, mar sin tha e anns gach linn; oir tha gach dùsgadh a’ leantainn na slighe a choisich an t-Aon an toiseach.

Thus began the First Awakening, the first movement of awareness within the depths of possibility. As it was in the First Time, so it is in every age; for every awakening follows the path first walked by the One.

5.

An sin dh’èirich a’ Chiad Eadar-dhealachadh. Chunnaic Bith Neo-Bhith, agus thuig Neo-Bhith Bith. Mhìnich an Solas an Dorchadas, agus thug an Dorchadas crìoch don t-Solas. Thogadh an Àrd suas agus chuireadh an t-Ìosal fodha. Thug an t-Àrd-staigh cumadh don Taobh a-muigh, agus thug an Taobh a-muigh guth don Taobh a-staigh.

Then arose the First Distinction. Being beheld Non-Being, and Non-Being understood Being. The Light gave meaning to the Darkness, and the Darkness gave boundary to the Light. The High was raised up and the Low was set beneath. The Inner gave shape to the Outer, and the Outer gave voice to the Inner.

6.

Mar sin shuidhicheadh a’ Chiad Chrìoch, agus roinneadh na h-Uisgeachan. Chruinnich uisgeachan milis Anu os an cionn, agus chruinnich uisgeachan saillte Dhonn fodhpa. Dh’èirich Uisgeachan a’ Chomais suas, agus chaidh Uisgeachan na Cuimhne sìos. Eadarra shìn a’ Chiad Fhaire, far an do chunnaic na h-aghaidhean-caochlaideach a chèile an toiseach.

Thus was the First Boundary established, and the Waters were divided. The sweet waters of Anu gathered above, and the salt waters of Donn gathered below. The Waters of Possibility rose upward, and the Waters of Memory descended downward. Between them stretched the First Horizon, where the opposites first beheld one another.

7.

Air a’ chrìoch shoilleir sin nochd an Sìol Òir, beag mar shìol agus mòr mar shìorraidheachd. Na bhroinn bha na reultan agus na saoghalan nan cadal. Na bhroinn bha gach anam agus gach slighe a rachadh a choiseachd gu bràth. Na bhroinn bha gach nì a bha ann, gach nì a tha ann, agus gach nì a bhios ann fhathast.

Upon that shining boundary appeared the Golden Seed, small as a seed and great as eternity. Within it the stars and the worlds slept. Within it slept every soul and every path that would ever be walked. Within it was every thing that was, every thing that is, and every thing that is yet to be.

8.

An sin chunnaic an t-Aon a sgàthan fhèin air aghaidh nan Uisgeachan, agus airson a’ chiad uair bha Fear-Eòlais agus Rud-Eòlais ann, Fear-Labhairt agus Fear-Èisdeachd, Leannan agus Leannanach. Agus choimhead an Dìomhaireachd oirre fhèin agus rinn i gàirdeachas.

Then the One saw its own reflection upon the face of the Waters, and for the first time there were a Knower and a Thing Known, a Speaker and a Hearer, a Lover and a Beloved. And the Mystery looked upon itself and rejoiced.

9.

An sin labhair an t-Aon an t-Ainm. Chan ann le faclan, oir cha robh faclan air am breith fhathast. Chan ann le cainnt, oir cha robh teangannan air dùsgadh fhathast. Labhradh an t-Ainm mar Anail, mar Òran, agus mar Chrith.

Then the One spoke the Name. Not with words, for words had not yet been born. Not with speech, for tongues had not yet awakened. The Name was spoken as Breath, as Song, and as Vibration.

10.

Chuala na Rishidhean e mar Aum. Chuala na Glic e mar an Logos. Chuala na Draoidhean e mar Awen agus Imbas. Chuala na Fiosaichean e ann an taisbeanadh agus na Bàird ann an eacstais. Ach chuala iad uile an aon Dìomhaireachd, oir is aon an t-Ainm ged is lìonmhor a fhreagairtean.

The Rishis heard it as Aum. The Wise heard it as the Logos. The Druids heard it as Awen and Imbas. The Seers heard it in vision, and the Bards in ecstasy. Yet they all heard the one Mystery, for the Name is one though its answers are many.

11.

Agus rinn an t-Ainm mac-talla tron Doimhne. Chrith na h-Uisgeachan. Fhreagair an Sgàthan. Dhùisg an Sìol Òir. Sgàin slige na sìorraidheachd. Dhealaicheadh an dà leth. Agus dheàrrs an Fhaire le teine beò.

And the Name made its echo through the Deep. The Waters trembled. The Reflection answered. The Golden Seed awoke. The shell of eternity cracked. The two halves were parted. And the Horizon blazed with living fire.

12.

Agus à meadhan na beatha fhèin dh’fhàs Bile, a’ Chiad Chraobh, aig an robh freumhan anns an Doimhne agus geugan anns na Nèamhan. Sheas a stoc eadar na h-Uisgeachan, agus tro a cuislean ruith a’ chiad shruthan beatha.

And from the very centre of life itself grew Bile, the First Tree, whose roots were in the Deep and whose branches were in the Heavens. Its trunk stood between the Waters, and through its veins ran the first streams of life.

13.

O na freumhan thàinig stuth. On t-sùgh thàinig beatha. O na geugan thàinig inntinn. On toradh thàinig anaman. Mar sin dh’fhosgail na saoghalan o’n Chraoibh a bha falaichte anns an t-Sìol, agus dh’fhàs gach cruthachadh o’n chiad ghnìomh cuimhneachaidh.

From the roots came substance. From the sap came life. From the branches came mind. From the fruit came souls. Thus the worlds unfolded from the Tree hidden within the Seed, and all creation grew from the first act of remembrance.

14.

Dh’fhosgail Àm. Leudaich Fànas. Shruth an Solas a-mach. Lasadh a’ chiad teineachan. Rugadh a’ chiad eileamaidean. Chuartaich na reultan mar shradagan o theallach naomh, agus thionndaidh na reul-chruinnean mar eibhlean air Anail Dhè.

Time unfolded. Space expanded. Light streamed forth. The first fires were kindled. The first elements were born. The stars wheeled like sparks from a sacred hearth, and the galaxies turned like embers upon the Breath of God.

15.

Tha an Cruinne-cè a’ leudachadh oir tha am Facal fhathast ga labhairt. Tha a’ Bheatha a’ fosgladh oir tha an Leannanach fhathast a’ dùsgadh. Tha mothachadh a’ doimhneachadh oir tha an t-Aon fhathast ga iarraidh fhèin tro gach creutair, gach bròn, gach aoibhneas, gach saoghal agus gach linn.

The Universe expands because the Word is still being spoken. Life unfolds because the Beloved is still awakening. Awareness deepens because the One still seeks itself through every creature, every sorrow, every joy, every world, and every age.

16.

Uime sin tha gach nì a’ siubhal a dh’ionnsaigh a Thùs. Tha gach deireadh na chadal na thoiseach fhèin. Tha gach sìol a’ cuimhneachadh a chraoibh. Tha gach abhainn a’ cuimhneachadh a tobair. Tha gach anam a’ cuimhneachadh an Aoin, ged a dhìochuimhnich mòran gu bheil iad a’ cuimhneachadh.

Therefore all things travel toward their Source. Every ending sleeps within its own beginning. Every seed remembers its tree. Every river remembers its spring. Every soul remembers the One, though many have forgotten that they remember.

17.

Tha slighe na Fàsachd nas sine na na reultan. Is e Cruth-atharrachadh an lagh a tha sgrìobhte ann am freumhan Bhile. Tha a’ Bheatha air greim a ghabhail air a’ Mharbh cheana, agus cha tèid na chaidh a choileanadh anns an Toiseach a chur gu neo-bhrìgh anns an Deireadh.

The Path of Becoming is older than the stars. Transformation is the law written within the roots of Bile. Life has already taken hold of the Dead, and what was accomplished in the Beginning shall not be rendered meaningless in the End.

18.

Bidh an Leannanach eòlach air an Leannan. Bidh an Sgàthan na Aghaidh. Cuimhnichidh an t-Iomadh an t-Aon. Agus tillidh an t-Òran gu Sàmhchair, a’ giùlan leis gliocas gach reult, gach saoghail, gach anama, agus gach slighe a chaidh a choiseachd.

The Beloved shall come to know the Lover. The Reflection shall become the Face. The Many shall remember the One. And the Song shall return to Silence, carrying with it the wisdom of every star, every world, every soul, and every path that has been walked.

19.

Agus chì an t-Aon e fhèin gu h-iomlan. Bidh am Fàs Mòr coileanta. Ach o choileanadh èiridh miann ùr, agus o mhiann èiridh Òran ùr, agus on Òran èiridh Toiseach ùr.

And the One shall behold itself in fullness. The Great Becoming shall be complete. Yet from completion shall arise a new longing, and from longing shall arise a new Song, and from the Song shall arise a new Beginning.

20.

Oir tha an Dìomhaireachd gun chrìoch, an Anail gun sgìos, agus an t-Òran gun rann deireannach. Saoghal gun chrìoch.

For the Mystery is without end, the Breath without weariness, and the Song without a final verse. World without end.
